הספר לא ארוך (פחות משלוש מאות עמודים), וכתוב ומתורגם בשפה קולחת.
הסטוריה של המדע בתחומי הפיסיקה מתוארת בתמציתיות כאשר חוט השני הוא הניסוח התמציתי של תופעות הטבע והיכולת לתאר באוסף קצר של נוסחאות את החוקים שלהם מציית הטבע.
בעוד שקל מאד היה להבין את הרעיונות, הקשיים, ההתפתחויות והנוסחאות עד וכולל תורת היחסות ואפילו תורת הקוונטים (לא פלא, את הרוב הבנתי ולמדתי בבית הספר ואת השאר לעומק בלימודי הפיסיקה בטכניון), היה לי קשה להבין את הדימויים מתורת המיתרים. גם נדמה לי שהמחבר עצמו הרבה "לרפד" את הקוראים בתחושה שהנושאים החל מתורת הקוונטים הם קשים ומורכבים מידי לאדם פשוט שאינו מומחה ושהמדע כפי שהוא מתואר בתיאוריות אלה הוא מעבר ליכולתם של רוב האנשים והוא זמין ונגיש רק למתי מעט שבקיאים במתמטיקה ובעקרונות הפיסיקליים.

מי יודע, אם לא בעוד כמה שנים, הנושאים הללו כבר יובנו היטב ויימצאו להם ניסוחים ברורים ותיאורים מאירי עיניים כך שבר בתיכון או לכל היותר בלימודי תואר ראשון במדע ובהנדסה ניתן יהיה ללמוד ולהבינם על בוריים או לכל הפחות את העקרונות ולקבל אינטאיציה ברורה.

נהנתי מאד מהקריאה.

מכונת הכביסה לא סוחטת ונשארים מים בדוד

כתבתי בפורום הורים בתפוז על מכונת הכביסה שלנו שההפסיקה לסחוט ולאחר ההפעלות נשארה עם מים בדוד.
קיבלתי שם עיצות ואח"כ ניסיתי ודיווחתי על ההצלחה.

הנה הפעולות שביצעתי:

1. פירקתי את המסנן (צריך קצת לפרק כדי להגיע אליו, כי זאת מכונה עם פתח עליון ואחרי שניקיתי אותו במים זורמים השריתי אותו בחומץ (זה שקונים בסופר: חומץ סינתטי של יכין ב-4 ש"ח לליטר שקונים בסופר במדפים של השמן והחומץ למאכל)
2. אח"כ הוצאתי את צינור הניקוז מפתח הניקוז והזרמתי לתוכו מים בעוצמה מצינור הגינה, במשך כ-10 שניות.
3. ניקיתי את הטינופת שהצטברה במכונה.
4. שפכתי ליטר חומץ לתאים ויחד עם המים שכבר היו במכונה בגלל השטיפה בצינור וסדרתי את המכסה (הפילטר עדיין מפורק ולא מורכב)
5. החזרתי את צינור הניקוז למקומו והפעלתי את המכונה בתכנית של סחיטה בלבד
6. המכונה סחטה כמו חדשה במהירות. ועבדה למשך כל התכנית (5 דקות)
7. פתחתי את המכונה עם סיום התכנית וראיתי שאין מים שנשארו, והתוף מבריק וללא שרידי אבנית.
8. חזרתי על שלבים 2-7 שוב
9. החזרתי את הפילטר הנקי (עכשיו אחרי ששהה כשלושים דקות בחומץ גם הוא הבריק והיה ללא שרידי אבנית) והרכבתי הכל בחזרה והחזרתי את כל הצינורות למקום.
10. מילאתי את המכונה בכביסה והפעלתי כרגיל.
11. התקלחתי ונסעתי לעבודה
12. מיכל התקשרה לבשר לי שהמכונה עובדת נפלא וכבר הפעילה עוד פעמיים את המכונה והכל תקין.

Users and programmers prefer to think about security by analogy with familiar symmetric-key ``secret codes.'' For mail-handling and file-handling, security designers have relied heavily on simple asymmetric encryption and signing, rather naïvely combined. Naïve sign & encrypt has surprisingly different security semantics from symmetric encryption, but the difference is subtle, perhaps too subtle for non-specialist users and programmers to grasp. Indeed, for senders, sign-and-encrypt guarantees the same security properties as symmetric-key cryptography gives. With both types of crypto, the sender is sure that:

• The recipient knows who wrote the message; and
• Only the recipient can decrypt the message.

The difference appears only in the recipient's security guarantees: the recipient of a symmetric-key ciphertext knows who sent it to him, but a ``simple sign & encrypt'' recipient knows only who wrote the message, and has no assurance about who encrypted it. This is because naïve sign & encrypt is vulnerable to ``surreptitious forwarding,'' but symmetric-key encryption is not. Since users always will assume that sign & encrypt is similar to symmetric-key ``secret codes,'' they will tend to trust naïve sign & encrypt too much.

JavaScript casting from string to numeral -- The 0 trick

Try this in the location bar of your browser (this will run the statements through the JavaScript implementation of your browser and write the evaluated value as a new document):

javascript: typeof("17" - 0)

This type casts the string "17" to the number 17. Your result will be number.

BUT:

javascript: typeof("17" + 0)

will type cast the number 0 to the string "0" and will concatenate it to the string "17", so you will get "170". Your result will be string.

AHA!

This looks like a thing that can result in bugs in implementations.

Snapshot of a web page

If you want to have an instant snapshot image of a web page as one would view it in a web page do the following (this is a firefox trick, I think that IE and other browsers have similar tricks):

1. add a bookmark to http://images.websnapr.com/?size=size&key=key&url=%s
2. edit the bookmark's properties: and give a keyword. I used "snap".
3. save
4. goto your browser's location bar and type snap URL where URL is some URL of a web page. Try for example: snap http://shlomoyona.blogspot.com
